When Emily first begins researching as Florence's assistant, what surprises her the most? How does her work influence the way she feels about her grandmother and their relationship?

The more Emily delves into Florences's writing and career, the more interested she becomes and the more she learns about Florence. This activity draws her closer to Florence and she wants to develop a different relationship with Florence and she does this to a degree.

Emily's research work for Florence was such an education for Emily. She knew very little about the early feminist movement and her grandmother's role and influence in it. That created a common interest between the two of them.

Emily was able to see her grandmother for her many contributions to feminism and not just look at her as a grandmother that wasn't as doting as a typical grandmother is. This allowed Emily to grow closer to Florence through respect.

I think first that she did not have recent connections with Florence and though she called her grandma this was more of a guided response from her parents then a love name. As she came to see what Florence had done she respected her and wanted to know more. She was not afraid to respond to Florence and in this way came to know her grandmother better.
