Which of the main characters in the story make growth choices and which make fear choices?

On page 15, Janine recalls an essay in which Florence quotes a psychologist who said that "one is constantly confronted by situations in which one must make either a growth choice or fear choice." Which of the main characters in the story make growth choices and which make fear choices?

I think all of the characters make both growth and fear choices by the end of the book.

Just making a choice seemed to be very difficult for the major characters.

Rather than write a paragraph in answer to this question, I will bulletize my answer:

* Daniel - growth
* Janine - fear
* Emily - both

This is a generalization, however. There is some fear and some growth involved in the decisions made by all of the main characters, but they strike me as making decisions that are primarily either one or the other.

I think Florence makes more fear choices.

I see both in all of the characters. I think Florence's choices in the time frame of the story are mostly fear choices. I think she is writing a memoir for fear the battles she has waged will be forgotten. She is afraid to let on to her family her health issues because she does not want them to see her as anything but strong as she has always been. She is afraid of her death and that the her book will not be finished before she dies. She is afraid to be close to Emily because she fears that she will scare her or will miss her too much.
Daniel mostly goes for growth and moving on whatever is happening or may happen.
Janine is mostly fear I think. And Emily is both but as the book progressess become more into making growth choices.

Like many others I think they made both choices. Daniel seemed not to make choices until the end and I'm not sure if returning to Seattle was either one. Masada that Florence chose to die alone. That just seemed to be a life choice for her, probably more fear of letting others in.

Florence often made choices based on fear. She rejected family and friends and close ties, choosing to isolate herself. Emily was much more open and like her mother made more growth choices.
