Filial devotion to parents, particularly to a father; and a wife’s subjugation to her husband are stereotypical of Korean culture. Young’s dedication and personal deprivation to ensure a top American education for her daughter. Duty, pride, blind allegiance to appearances. Korean culture is highly patriarchal. But it was the American women that were willing to try experimental therapies for their children. Ultimately, the book shows that all are similar in wanting what is best for their children.
