If you could ask the author one question, what would it be?

On finishing the collection, and particularly after reading the end note, I did want to try to understand what it was in Lucia Berlin that drove her to live her life on the edge, despite most likely being in constant pain from scoliosis (so bad that later in her life it led to a punctured lung). I suppose to get a sense of what causes a person to respond to the card's life deals them in one way, and another in an entirely different way.

I found a series of five short videos from 2002 of Berlin talking about her life and books which gave me a bit of a feel for her as a person, in particular the first "Pen Pals" and second "Mama."

Looking back on her life, as a mother were there any aspects she regretted or would have done differently? Not the alcoholism as much as mayor life choices?

Seriously, what were you thinking?

I would ask her if she ever found that "something" she sought from her life experiences.

How did you manage to write, and write well, while raising four kids? When did you write? Where did you write? (As an aspiring author, I really want to know!) :)

Were you ever concerned about the ramifications of your lifestyle on your children?
