Why do you think the entire collection was named after the story, "Evening in Paradise"?

The story is emblematic of the 1960’s, referencing the making of the movie, Night of the Iguana with Ava Gardner and Richard Burton. Several of the main characters in some of the other stories show up in this story. Finally, the ending really packs a punch. You go, Maya. Plus, the title is just plain catchy.

I thought after reading the information about the author that this story was the most biographical, it captured the romance of an era. It also was one of my favorites with so many characters and vivid imagery. As Peggy pointed out, it is a great name!

First we have Hernan who had a father figure watching out for him as he made a satisfying life for himself in PV. Hernan's bar is a microcosm of Berlin's world: the community who drank at the Oceano brought in a mix of flirtation and sex, alcohol and drugs, romance and treachery, the innocent and the world weary, plus humor. And then we get Liz and Burton. This story gives us a peek into each of the others in the collection.

When I read the story, Evening in Paradise, I thought the title was ironic. On the surface, the bar and the city itself seem like a beautiful getaway, a tropical paradise for tourists and residents, alike. By the end of the story we see the ugliness and even the introduction of the drug trade into paradise. The reader senses that the evening or the end of paradise is right around the corner. That theme shows up in a number of the other stories as relationships, childhood and the “good times” draw to a close.
