In "Endado", both Pepe and Xavier are wealthy yet aware of the disparities in the world; they each seek, in their own way, to make a difference. It seems as if the loudest voices for change are often those of young adults. Why do you suppose this is?

Young people are not yet jaded by experience and disappointed by failure. The world seems open to them and they feel that they can do anything. Besides, they just have more energy both mentally and physically. Oh, to be young again. Truthfully, I would not go back to youth even if I could. Too much angst.

I think peggyt hit the nail on the head - young folks still believe anything is possible, that they can change the world. Those of us who are older tend to feel like there's nothing we can realistically do to impact the direction one's country is headed. I also wonder if younger people are less able to understand compromise and the need to find middle ground than the older generation -- or perhaps I'm just being biased in favor of my own age group!

I agree that unfortunately life makes you realize your limitations as you mature. I think it wonderful and so refreshing to see the passion in which young people demand attention to important world needs. Change can happen when those in power are persuaded by those with conviction.

RE:

My years of social justice activism occurred when my career was emerging, the years of few bills and no kids. I also had more energy, more time and many fellow travelers. As I grew older I became less radical and my "loud voice for change" transformed, I began using different vehicles. Today's culture has spawned model voices for change: Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan, Emma Gonzalez from Parkland, Greta Thunberg from Sweden. That seems to be how the course of change has developed in my lifetime.

I agree with those who have said that young adults haven't yet been jaded by experience or discouraged by failure and view a world full of possibilities. They also very often have strong convictions and want to put them into action. Until recent years, my own social activism had lessened from when I was a young adult, but the pressing problems (climate change, gun violence, air and water pollution, etc) have returned me to social activism at a level I haven't had since I was a young adult. So it is possible for loud voices for change to also come from older adults, uniting with younger adults.

Inexperience makes the young sure they can made a difference in the world.

The young are optimistic and not confined by reality. Unfortunately, many youth get wound up about things they really know nothing about. Not all of them, but many of them!

The story mirrors real life. It seems to have been true since the beginning or recorded history. Young people might still be more idealistic and still have faith that change will not only happen, but happen quite soon. They are not yet bogged down by any - or as many- tragedies in their own lives that social causes take more of a back seat. Also, as people reach retirement age and live into years past retirement, they sometimes can not relate some of the concerns of young adults because life is so different.
