Were you familiar with Michelle's music & band before reading this book? Is so, did your sense of her. change because of the book?

No, I didn't, but it has made me curious and so I did go online and listen to several of her songs.

I didn't realize the author was a "famous singer" until I had read several chapters. I looked her up and discovered I was not familiar with any of her music. I guess I am more of a dinosaur than I thought!

Before reading her book, I did not know of Michelle as a musician. I have since listened to some of her music and enjoy it. I will be passing along the book as well as a heads up on her sound.

I have not gone on to listen to her music - while her musical background and career informed the story and her as a person, it wasn't a critical element to the story, rather something that enhanced it.

Listening to her music after reading her book, made me appreciate the songs a little more. I know I will download more of her music and I wouldn’t have done so if I hadn’t read her memoir.

Michelle’s music is beautiful, she was a very driven young person to give up so much for her career. It made me sad that her parents did not seem to support her or realize how talented she is. What an amazing daughter to dedicate an album of songs to her mother as well as this memoir.

No, but now that I've listened and relistened to "Be Sweet" several times, I can't help but find significance in the refrain:
"Be sweet to me baby

Michelle Zauner is a seeker, both in her musical lyrics and in her memoir.

Being in my eighties, I am used to references to popular music I know nothing about and find abrasive when I am forces to listen to it. But being determined to get the most out of her memoir, I made playlists of Japanese Breakfast songs to play while cooking the noodles or stir-frying the veggies for my attempts at Korean cooking. I was surprised to discover how much I enjoyed both. The songs were easy to listen to and gave me another glimpse at the emotional life of this talented young woman. And the food was full of flavor and filled in the gaps in my limited experience that helped me understand how important these dishes were to the memories and close bonds that united her family in love and mutual dependence.

As many others have said I too had never heard Japanese Breakfast. In reading her memoir I thought she was a lost young adult caught between two cultures. But she turned this struggle into a gift of writing and and music. Suffering is the path for many gifted artists and poets. I have now listened to her music and will continue to do so.
