I found this difficult to accept as a mother that you could leave your child hanging in guilt her entire life and not have some closure at death.

I honestly think that Kai was on her way for a reconciliation. By revisiting the past with Hanna she was
sharing the love they had and creating a bond with her unmet sister.

I believe that Kai planned have Hana meet her sister and to reconcile with Paula.

She blamed her daughter for her life. She could not take responsibility for her actions and the consequences. It drove me crazy !!!

RE: Why do you think even at the end of life Kai couldn't have reached out to reconcile with Paula?

I'd like to think that Kai was on her way to reconcile with Paula with the hopes of the reconciliation leading to Paula assuming responsibility for Hana since her mom was dying. However, I still have an issue with Kai never accepting responsibility for her actions that led to her position in life. It really bothers me that Paula was blamed for Kai ending up in prison. Had Kai not moved in with a drug dealer...then Paula never would've had reason to call the police. I wish Paula had stopped blaming herself for Kai ending up in prison. The choices parents make often have negative consequences for their children. Kai never seemed to accept responsibility for any of her actions that harmed her children. Even attempting to drive Hana to Paula while she was dying was a poor choice that ended up with Hana in the system. I think Kai lacked the ability to acknowledge & admit that SHE was the one to blame as a result of her choices & actions. She was just too selfish of a person to reconcile.

RE: Why do you think even at the end of life Kai couldn't have reached out to reconcile with Paula?

Kai's journey at the end through the places she and Paula stayed was strange. I wasn't sure if she had reinvented Hana as Paula and was going for a second chance. Since the Hindu literature was the backbone of most of her experiences with Paula, I was thinking of Kai's belief in reincarnation. It was appropriate that she was swerving on the streets in the Morningside section of Atlanta because she lived an equally erratic life. I don't think the reception that Paula would have given her would have been welcoming. Her note in her returned check more or less closed any doors of reconciiation. It did cross my mind that her return to Paula with Hana might be a form of punishment for Paula.

I think Kai was trying to reconcile with Paula by bringing her Hanna since she was dying of cancer. Unfortunately, she had much less time left than she thought as a result of the cancer. I don't think she intended to leave off on that note with Paula. However, the fact that Kai had shared stories with Hanna involving Paula I think really helped Paula become more at peace with what happened.

Relationships are complicated and hurts that are held on to that long take on a life of their own. In her own backwards way I think that she was trying to reach out to Paula. Maybe she though that by Paula meeting Hanna that a door would be opened but she passed away before that had a chance to develop Kai was unable to be a "grownup" under the best of circumstances. To put the past in the past and reach out directly was more than someone with her issues would be capable of

Well, she was on her way to bring Hana-a kind of reconciliation. This foes not quite jell withnthebladt cryptic note, but then Kai was always a kind of two faced entity.
