The idea of a "scarcity mentality" is mentioned in the book, relating to a lack of Asian and female representation in the media. Did this impact how you think about representation, cultural differences, and community building? If so, how?

There are a lot of interesting, complex discussions about race in the book, including this one. It's worth contemplating, as a white person, how scarcity mentality affects the opportunities that non-white people see as available to them, and imagining how those limitations might affect the trajectory of a person's life. Zauner's story is especially moving because the death of her mother felt like the end of a part of herself, and it's beautiful watching her revive that part through food, cooking, and travel.

This idea is certainly not new is it? Maybe we called it having no, or few, role models. That is how I interpret it anyway. I think every person born faces some sort of prejudice or feeling of incomplete representation. I have felt it. So, no this idea brought nothing new to my understanding profoundly specific to any one group. Certainly there is a broader spectrum represented mainstream now then when my gen was growing up, for example. Good that.

Not in the least. I do find it interesting that mixed race children often have a difficult time affiliating with either parental race. I almost feel we promote that by specifying race in all our government documents. What if we dissolved the concept of race completely? What if we just affiliated based on being American? Even white Americans bring different cultural traditions, foods, experiences to the table.;

Yes, I thought this was so honest - people often talk about having one person they looked up to and that making all the difference in pursuing something, but people rarely talk about (or admit?) that seeing only one person who looks like them can create an idea that there is only room for one person like them. I think we all need to hear about each other's experiences, especially when it isn't the dialogue we typically hear.
