What did you think about the various characters' reactions to folklore and superstition? Is there a superstition you adhere to?

People's reactions to superstition, folklore, and the mystical are very very different and very well described in the book by the reactions to them in Anna's parents. I live with this every day. I enjoy watching superhero and magical movies and my husband always dismisses them as "hokey".

character's reaction ranged from accepting to skeptical to non-believing. While I am generally not superstitious, my Italian grandmother, and Mother embedded certain habits .. . entering and leaving through the same door, salt over the shoulder and knocking on wood...

My mother celebrated her Irish half completely; however, I believe in symbols, signs, spirits, messages from the dead far more than she did. A shiny penny left in an odd place is a message mom is with me; a rose in winter; messages from angels on license plates…I avoid walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, and stepping on cracks, However, I consider black cats and Friday 13th good luck.

Me, too, Irish superstitions most given me by my German heritage mother--lol Give a purse to someone, put a coin in it. Knife or blade give with money. Knock on wood--definitely, many times on my own head rather than other wood, spilt salt, some goes over the shoulder. Itchy foot means travel, there was one with crossing the palm with something--money?--don't remember. Broken mirror-7 years bad luck--that one's a toughie, I broke the big mirror on the back of my door last Fall--I'm 81 almost 82--do I even have 7 years left??LOL

Characters in the book were skeptical. Probably in the world today as well. I grew up hearing a lot of superstitions and folklore. Such as, hold your thumbs for luck, dropping silverware meant company was coming, a man had to be the first one to visit your house on New Year's Day for a year of good luck. Many more! I love them and think folklore is fun!

I found the characters various attitudes to folklore and superstition to be interesting. There were those that seemed to embrace it and others than didn't believe at all. Friday the 13th is probably my greatest superstition. I expect bad things to happen that day.

I found it very interesting and realistic. Many people believe in superstition while many others do not. In fact, they find it ridiculous, stupid, and even blasphemous. I don't really believe in superstition but find myself walking around a ladder, throwing salt over my left shoulder, and staying away from black cats. Until I had one of my own.

I think that as part of the fantasy or magical realism, the characters believing in the superstition significant. Personally, I don’t give much thought to it, although, there are traditions passed down, in my family not to do something on a certain day, or to “tempt’ bad fates by breaking with a tradition.

Not a lot of superstitions - I might virtually knock on wood once in awhile. I do however put money in a purse or wallet gift, so keep the recipient from going broke.
I expected the varying beliefs of the characters. If you live around myths and superstitions you tend to believe a bit more in them.
