When Libertie moved into the shed and lived with Ti Me what did she learn and how did this affect the kind of mother she wanted to be?

Ti Me was accepting of the life on Haiti, and she was able to explain it to Libertie without judging it. Libertie made up her own mind about living there. Ti Me also allowed Libertie to become her own person. In the shed she became herself, not her mother and not Emmanuel.

Libertie had always been under someone’s control, she went from Cathy’s house to Emmanuel’s house. Being in the shed allowed her to step back and realize what she wanted from life. The character of Ti Me showed Libertie another woman who had made great personal sacrifice. I felt it made Libertie think about her own mother’s sacrifice.

I agree with all three of the statements above. I was pleased that Libertie made the decision to move to the shed despite physical inconvenience. It was good that Ti Me was not intimidated by Libertie because she was able to point out some of Libertie errant ways. That feedback helped Libertie realize that she needed to reunite with her mother.

I think as mentioned by all the statements so far that staying in the shed ended up being good for Libertie because she was able to exercise her own freedom of choice. However, I felt Ti Me was influencing Libertie because of her own reasons. She had always had influence over Emmanuel and with the surprise of Liberties arrival that was in jeopardy. Ultimately the decision to leave Haiti and reunite with her mother and to raise her kids in America came from being able to live independently in the shed out from under Emmanuel and that she was very capable of taking care of herself.
