When Roy announces to Davina his intention to return to his wife, do you feel that her anger is justified?

When Roy is released from prison, he first goes to his childhood home and almost immediately makes a connection with Davina. Do you feel that given the tenuous relationship he has with Celestial—who is still legally his wife—he is cheating? Why or why not? And when Roy announces to Davina his intention to return to his wife, do you feel that her anger is justified?

RE: When Roy announces to Davina his intention to return to his wife, do you feel that her anger is justified?

Yes because he implied to Davina that his marriage was not in good shape and by the way he treated her, it was reasonable for her to expect more from him. Was it cheating? If a couple has only been together for a little over a year and then kept apart for five years, it is hard for me to see it that way. However, for him to go right from Davina to try to get back with Celestial, that was wrong. I just feel that Roy thought the world revolved around him.

No, Davina shouldn’t have been angry at Roy. She knew Roy was married and she knew he wanted to get back with Celestial. I think she was angry with herself for being vulnerable.

No, I don't think Davina should have been angry. She knew the circumstances when she got involved with Roy. But with that said I was angry at Roy! If he loved Celestial as much as he claimed why did he get involved with Davina so quickly?

She knew he was just out of prison and married. He found solace in Davina but had made no promises. Yet, I think she cared for him and was angered by how easily he turned away from her. Sometimes women give of themselves too easily.

Sometimes it is easier to push someone away if you are angry at them. She was hurt that he did not chose her.

Yes she was right to feel angry, but he did tell he was married and made no promises to her.

Roy was clear with Davina about his intentions. And they only knew each other for a couple of days, so its reasonable to have limited expectations.
I don't consider Roy seeing Davina as cheating...He and Celestial were over. They hadn't seen each other or spoken in 2 years. Although they were still legally married, they didn't have much of a relationship. I thought it was quite a bit of wishful thinking on Roy's part to think Celestial was going to run back to him right after he gets out of prison after so much time had passed.

No. I didn't understand why she got the impression that this was going to be a long-term relationship.

Does her anger need to be justified? Emotions don't necessarily need justification. Actions, on the other hand, do. Davina's anger is understandable, whether it's justified or not.

RE: When Roy announces to Davina his intention to return to his wife, do you feel that her anger is justified?

Her anger with Roy is not justified - if that is the person she's really feel anger toward. She knew what was going on - she was a lonely as he was and looking for comfort where she could find it. He told her how he felt about Celestial and she allowed him to stay anyway. Their time together was a healing time for both of them. No doubt she was hurt when he did finally leave, when he did not choose her, and she may have been, as someone has already mentioned, angry with herself for taking him in to begin with. I thought this interlude in the novel and the way they got along seemed to be a precursor for what was to eventually be. There had been enough pain up to that point, and while it was not ended, this two days for them together eased that pain and foretold and kinder and gentler ending.

I do feel that Davina is justified in being angry. She was used or taken advantage of by Roy. The amount of time away from his wife does not matter; if you are still married and you engage in physical contact with someone else, it is cheating.

I agree with many noted comments - Davina knew he was going to try to go back to Celestial, but Roy should not have become involved with Davina - he wants to have his cake and eat it too - he seems to have a way of justifying his selfish needs - as h did before his arrest when he was cheating on his wife but dismissing it as meaningless. He did not really concern himself with anyone's feeling but his own.

RE: When Roy announces to Davina his intention to return to his wife, do you feel that her anger is justified?

As long he was still legally married to his wife, having a sexual encounter with another woman is called cheating. Both Roy and Celestial were cheating on each other. Hence Davina knew Roy’s status beforehand, and she accepted this and was totally aware of Roy’s situation. As an adult, she should have known what to expect from a man incarcerated for 5 years who just came out and hasn’t seen his wife or been with a woman.

I can’t leave out that he had made no promises to Davina whatsoever. If she felt used, she set herself up into that situation.
She might have been also angry at herself by the way she immediately fell for him.
