Do you think that Celestial made the right decision with regard to Roy towards the end of the novel?

Toward the end of the novel, Celestial does a complete about-face and returns to Roy. What do you think her emotions were in coming to that decision? Do you feel that it was the right decision?

Yes. She needed to take Roy back so she could gain the strength to let him go so they both could move on with their lives. Celestial had to know if the relationship could work and the only way to know that was to give it another try. It didn’t work so she had to move on.

I think the fact that she'd hung on to that tooth made her think there was still something there. It was one last attempt to recapture what once was. However, when Roy almost forced himself on her, they both knew it couldn't be. He realized he wasn't the same person and that he couldn't do that to her. Perhaps it was the right decision for her to have him stay so she could see if there was anything left between them.

I believe they still loved each other, but not in the ways they each needed in order to make the marriage succeed. While Roy was in prison, both he and Celestial changed. They had to in order to be able to move on with their lives. Everything Roy had before he was falsely accused of the rape was gone. When he was released, he wanted everything to be the way it was before, to be able to move on from there. I think Celestial really felt like she owed it to Roy to see if they could make something work between them, since he had lost absolutely everything in his life through no fault of his own. But in the end they both realized it was not going to work.

Although Celestial did go back to Roy, it was pretty brief. I took it more as a moment of closure to move on, especially during a time of high emotions following Roy's release.
I was not disappointed or surprised Celestial and Roy didn't stay together. I found Roy to be a bit of an arrogant, shallow playboy. I preferred Andre's character much more.

Celestial's return to Roy is the action that finally allowed her to fully understand who she was and accept herself as that person. Returning to her marriage was the act that set her free.

I understand that she was very sorry for Roy because of everything that had happened to him and that at the bottom of her heart she wanted to give her marriage a shot. She knows that she owes him something. Therefore, it was the right decision, it was a way of giving themselves the last opportunity as husband and wife. I think that this really worked out and it gave closure to their story. Both were very peaceful with the outcome and it helped them realize that in the end, it was the right decision.
