How did you end up feeling about Haiti?

There are a number of scenes depicting the beauty of living in Haiti, the scents and images of living there. At the same time, it is filled with its own secrets and limitations. How did you end up feeling about Haiti?

Haiti has not changed much . They are still a poor, patriarchal where their is little hope for the future. I know people who have recently volunteered there and found that the people are trapped by their traditions and there are no resources for the people to improve their lives.

Haiti is described as lush, exotic and mysterious. The culture seems mystical and patriarchal with little space for personal growth… especially for women.

Haiti's description explained some of why the country has not prospered and moved forward. The social system and superstition held them back. That's pretty simplistic, I know, the climate and mis use of the land also played a big role.

Haiti has had its share of problems from natural disasters to political corruption. Having been there several years ago, these events do not allow most people to rise above the poverty and conditions that result from the poor conditions - poor health, poor education, few opportunities to escape those elements.

Haiti is a culture resplendent with beauty and torn apart by suffering. Undereducation, religiosity, patriarchy, and colonialism draw upon one another. What I appreciated about Kaitlyn Greenidge's depiction of Haiti in Libertie was how a high born daughter of America viewed Haiti as opposed to how Haitians view themselves. I am curious though how Haitians thought of their portrayal in Libertie. Stereotypical, or delving into historical and cultural realities?

I've thought of Haiti as a country held back by generational customs and corruptions in its leadership/government. It seemed that in book, the Americans looked down on the Haitian people and felt they needed to "change" them. It didn't sound like their efforts were very productive. I can't say I changed my feelings about Haiti from the book.

When I think of Haiti I think of a lush tropical country. Extreme poverty and political unrest also come to mind. The country has been beset with terrible natural tragedies as well. I think Libertie was able to see some of the beauty in the country. She realizes sadly that she could never go back.

Haiti has been beset by political corruption and natural disasters throughout history. Women, the poor, and the least able have always been exploited and the most likely to suffer. Libertie is hoping for an escape and a better life, although she sees some of the natural beauty in the land she does not find what she had hoped for in marriage or in the island.

My feelings about Haiti have not changed since reading the book Its a poor corrupt nation. People there do not seem able to get ahead.

I liked how Liberty saw the beauty and the scars of Haiti and embraced them as one. Beautiful places can still have big problems
I think the author used her characters to show us both the ugly and the beauty which kept me from focusing on just the less desirable traits of Haiti that are well known
