Emmanuel was a very light skinned black man. From the moment he met Libertie he seemed to target her. Was this because of her back skin? Did he think because of this he could control her. Perhaps he knew how her mother had controlled her. I was pleased the Graces helped Libertie and her children escape from him and Haiti.

I liked Emmanuel at first because I thought his intentions were genuine. However, it seems she was a way to taunt his father and sister. She was susceptible because of the uncertainty in insecurity in her own life. I disliked Emmanuel as his character was more fully disclosed.

I found him confusing. I do not understand how he good be two such different men. In America he was all about freedom of women and sounded like he wanted this free life too. He states his idea of freedom is when we are wholly in charge of our own destiny. This is certainly not what he had at home. I do not know if he will have the courage to again come to America.

I never cared for Emmanuel and was suspicious of him from the beginning. His attractiveness to Libertie just didn’t make sense. I think Cathyoc’s comments summed up his motivations perfectly. I think when they were in Haiti he showed some signs of affection or caring but I felt that was to keep Libertie thinking her life was better with him. I agree with Nancyh that he probably would not return to America.

As mentioned by others here he was like two personalities.
The American personalities was kind and respectful but in hindsight I think secretively manipulative. The Haiti Emmanuel was self serving and egotistical. Power took over and helping people was just his way of Exacting it over the people he was supposedly helping in the community. He also used it to manipulate his sister, and father as well as Libertie. I do believe he was taught this by Ti Me who purposely favored him over his sister teaching him he could overpower his twin. I thought Libertie was pretty smart to call him out on it soon after arriving In Haiti when no one else was!

He turned out to be very stereotypical character. He was charming & light skinned. Libertie's mother loved him & I think she could see what Libertie could become. She praised his every move but maybe that was her way to show Libertie what she wanted for her daughter.
Their beginning love story was unbelievable as was their intimate relationship.
Then it became clear why he wanted Libertie to go to Haiti. He was controlling, manipulative, dishonest...Cold -- as I write this I wonder if all Libertie's relationships are like this - what she learned of love from her mother - cold, distant, self-centered people...
