I think the Graces showed Libertie that women can control their own lives.

Libertie did not have friends at the college mainly because she was in classes with all males. The Graces became her friends when she had no one else. She was amazed at the friendship the two had and how close they were. Then she realized their love for each other and realized she wanted friendship and love more then an education and certainly more then becoming a doctor. Her mother hold her later that she chose flesh over her mind. She saw that the Graces were following their dream and succeeding.

Libertie grow up in a free home, with her own mother. The Graces experienced Slave life and their families being separated. Libertie experienced that through them, she also saw their devotion and love for each other. She wanted to belong to them and the music but that wasn't possible because of their bond. It did show her a different way of being.

Libertie was looking for someone or something to be interested in besides her education. She always was interested in music, something her Mother was not. The Graces were something different for her. She loved their music and their background was so different from hers. It also showed her even if her music did not go far, she did not want to be a doctor.

I feel the Graces were Liberties real teachers, they taught her about the freedom to forge your own destination, the freedom to dream, they taught her the freedom to love who you want to love, and the freedom to believe in yourself

The Graces were Liberties first real friends. She admired the closeness that they had with each other and worked really hard to become friends with them, hoping that she could also feel that kind of love. The music drew her in, and maybe was even a little rebellion towards her mother, since she was not interested in music in the least. I think Libertie saw a way to incorporate some fun into her life with the music and these friends, something she wasn't used to having around her mother.

The Graces gave Libertie an example of women in charge of their own lives. They also offered her friendship and support. I felt like their example encouraged her to strike out on her own and return to the US after the birth of her child.

The Graces were two women who made a life for themselves in a time where independent woman were very unusual. They taught Libertie that happiness is possible without conforming. Libertie was in awe of their talent, I think Libertie does not realize she has talents if her own.
