Lakshmi is such a strong and multifaceted character. What makes her that way? What are three things a great protagonist needs to truly stand out?

Lakshmi shows a willingness to accept a challenge, great determination to overcome the challenges that present themselves, and a willingness to change/adapt when necessary -- without submitting herself for the sake of getting by. (This last is particularly important for great FEMALE protagonists, since it is also possible to adapt by giving in.)

She had to learn by necessity to fight for herself and overcome the many obstacles in her. I would say besides overcoming great obstacles, a great protagonist is someone you care about who you want to succeed. .Also, as laurap said, she has to do it on her own terms with gumption and a moral compass.

A great protagonist must meet a challenge with strength, be flexible enough to know and admit when help is needed, and ultimately must succeed at the task, albeit with scars perhaps but still succeed. Finally (4th thing), as indicated above, the protagonist must be relatable to the reader or else the story doesn't work. Lakshmi met all this criteria for me.

A great protagonist needs to be the lens through how the reader sees the story, needs to be interesting enough to keep the reader reading, and needs to have a goal that the reader can see or identify. Lakshmi’s character has these qualities and they driven the story.

Lakshmi is multifaceted, and yet not perfect--that is what makes her interesting. You get to see two sides of her--with her clients, and with her sister, and see them evolve over challenging circumstances.

Lakshmi's problem-solving skills were present throughout the story. She is determined, but plagued with the wrongs she feels guilty about so her decisions are influenced in that way. She ran from the parents she loved, with the belief that someday after her success, she would return triumphant and rescue them. Throwing the unknown sister into the mix drove the rest of the story. Lakshmi demonstrated patience and determination, while enduring the rough emotional toll from her sister. Good protagonists are usually faced with problems and then solve them, and Lakshmi was no different.

A protagonist in a story needs to be identifiable. Strongwomen in stories usually turn people off but Lakshmi had a very loving side and she had to fight for what she had in life. Did not succumb to what others wanted her to do and give up on her desires.
