Lakshmi and Malik are very close, even though she is Hindu and he is Muslim. What does this say about the relationship between these two religions?

It appeared that neither were particularly devout in their faiths. However, when people are just trying to exist "religion" doesn't usually play a part. Kind of like Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Agree with scgirl. Lakshmi and Malik have bonded over something more powerful - survival. I also think that she sees in him a way to redeem what she was unable to do for her birth family.

Malik needs work and Lakshmi needs help so their initial partnership is mutually beneficial, more of a business arrangement. Later, they develop a deeper emotional connection to each other that goes beyond their different religions.

melanieb makes a great point about how their relationship started out as more of a business relationship at first, but then slowly developed into a more emotional one. Sometimes the best relationships can come from the most unexpected places and experiences.

I agree with those who mentioned a business relationship as the foundation for their relationship. Once mutual respect and need is established, the relationship has a basis for growth. Neither focused on their religion, although both were observant to a degree. Their relationship reminded me of my mother telling me to establish a relationship based on something other than sex with guys. That advice is useful in ALL situations. Base the relationship on mutual wants, needs, preferences, activities and respect and the relationship can grow. A relationship based on just power (or any ONE thing) leads to an imbalance and stifles the relationship. We saw that in this book when Lakshmi's relationships with her "ladies" was only based on their need for service. When they no longer needed her, the relationship was over.
