This novel is set in the 1950s just as one hundred years of British rule is ending, and Indian society is going through a huge transition. What did you learn about life at that time of cultural shift in India's history? Did that realization change any of your assumptions about India?

I learned the caste system allows certain liberties within each caste but a person doesn’t really get to leave the system they’re born into to rise to a different caste. This realization didn’t change my previous assumptions about India.

The caste system in India, especially at that time, can seem so complicated. There are rigid and strict rules one must follow, but as melanieb says there are also certain liberties allowed. I would find it very difficult to live in such a rigid system.

Not sure if I learned this about India - but once again it showed that when one group replaces another group in power - then too often the take on the attributes of the group that they replaced.

I enjoyed learning about the henna traditions.

I knew about the caste system, I think it still is in place somewhat now. I too enjoyed leaning about Henna and the traditions.
