Interesting question! I agree that she would be some sort of nurse. I would hope like anyone who had served their time, she would have a rightful place in society, but that's difficult for anyone who is released. Maybe it was easier in Tasmania at that time?

I can imagine Hazel being a healer. Her patients would learn about her skills from one another; they would pass on those good words to others in need.
Hazel could be a leader in her community, her fame growing with each person she helps. Even though other medical services would be available, she would still be the one to seek out to receive requests from those who do not rely on doctors and the like.
She is a most interesting and valuable character.

I think if Hazel had lived in the present day I believe she would have worked in a field caring for people. She might have been a midwife or worked as someone in the holistic healing field. Her interest and knowledge of natural remedies and plants would have drawn her to a careers related to mental and physical wellness.
