I think things have gotten somewhat better. Gay individuals are now allowed to marry (they weren't universally permitted to until 2015). In addition, they're showing up more and more on TV shows and commercials, which says to me that there's more acceptance, more normalizing of this lifestyle. It's still apparent that there's a way to go, though. The folks I know who are gay still keep their relationships pretty private, and there are certainly plenty of people out there that DO discriminate against them. There's a long-running court case here in Oregon against a business that refused to sell a couple a wedding cake, once they realized the couple was same-sex. And, my sister asked me if I was worried about having a gay friend. "What if someone from work sees you out with her?" So yeah, it's better, but there are still challenges.
