One of Ruth’s friends, Tess, is gay. She says that Ruth can bring her husband anywhere, including work functions, and "no one bats an eye." Tess goes on to say, "Nothing is routine for me." The novel is set in 2008. Do you think things have changed for gay couples since then, and if so, how? In what ways have they not changed?

I think things have gotten somewhat better. Gay individuals are now allowed to marry (they weren't universally permitted to until 2015). In addition, they're showing up more and more on TV shows and commercials, which says to me that there's more acceptance, more normalizing of this lifestyle. It's still apparent that there's a way to go, though. The folks I know who are gay still keep their relationships pretty private, and there are certainly plenty of people out there that DO discriminate against them. There's a long-running court case here in Oregon against a business that refused to sell a couple a wedding cake, once they realized the couple was same-sex. And, my sister asked me if I was worried about having a gay friend. "What if someone from work sees you out with her?" So yeah, it's better, but there are still challenges.

Things are definitely better in 2022 than they were in 2008. Even Obama did not champion gay marriage at the beginning of his term. Still, with all of the acceptance today, gay individuals are still at risk of being attacked in public. We, as a society, must change our views.

Some changes depending on where you live. There is still a risk of public threats which is arguably the case for any minority group.

I agree with everything that other readers have said above. Sometimes geographic location makes a big difference. Sometimes people act like they are totally accepting but will still not accept a family member who comes out as LGBTQ.

Yes but painfully slow progress
There have been several legal victories in marriage rights and survivor benefits but unfortunately no federal protection fir LGBTQ people from discrimination in public accommodations or businesses, social acceptance is still slowly burgeoning on causing chronic social stress and mental health issues for millions WITHIN THE LGBTQ especially the youth.

I agree with the other readers there have been many victories for gay rights since 2008 plus more people have accepted them in social circles--not seeing them as any different. Yet, like other groups they find comfort in belonging to groups they identify as theirs,

I think things are much better for gay couples today than in 2008, but I do believe we still have a long way to go as far as equality and acceptance for everyone.

I think life for LGBTQ+ folks is better in many ways. But much of what better means depends on the folks surrounding you. Can you find representation in media yes? Does that mean that your church, school, etc. is accepting? Not necessary. It depends on community, family, and folks willing to be open about their support.

I agree with the other responses; a lot is dependent upon the geographic location. In my opinion, people may be a little more receptive since 2008 but in Southern, traditional locations, it can still be quite uncomfortable and not so acceptable.

I live in a rural area of southern Illinois; I can tell you that geographic location makes a huge difference in the acceptance of the gay community. There's still a lot of work to be done for gay rights.

There are places that are still in the 1950's when it comes to LGBT and there are places that are up to date and don't think a thing about it. Prejudice and bias will be around as long as mankind - even tho gay life has advanced, there will still be problems, just as there will still be problems with race.
