Why do you think Arie did not tell Fenna in person that they were moving away? Did you have a friend when you were a child that moved, or that you moved away from?

When Fenna was young, Arie and his family moved away suddenly. Why do you suppose he didn't tell her in person? Did you have a friend when you were a child that moved, or that you moved away from? If so, what do you remember about the experience?

That seemed to be a pattern in their lives, doesn't it. Arie left Fenna with just a note, and later Fenna left Arie the same way.

Other than being a plot device - a way to draw parallels - I think either Arie didn't have time, or he knew his leaving would hurt Fenna & didn't want to witness her reaction.

I think Arie knew Fenna would be upset and didn’t want to deal with both of their emotions in an in-person farewell. Both characters tend to avoid in person confrontation.

I think Arie was surprised his family was moving and didn't have time to formulate a plan of saying goodbye. They were both very young and Arie could have been optimistic that this would not be permanent.

I agree with those above. I particularly think Arie most likely did not want to deal with or feel comfortable dealing with what he assumed would be Fenna's reaction. He was a young boy and strong emotions can be difficult for anyone to deal with. I also wonder whether he was a bit wary of how he might react to the parting as well as Fenna’s reaction.
