I am curious as to what other readers thought of The Third Wife in general? What are some of the strengths/weaknesses from your perspective? Compared to other Lisa Jewell novels, how does this one rate?

RE: What did you see as the strengths/weaknesses of the book?

I think Ms Jewell did a fantastic job of highlighting what is wrong about the way marriage/divorce, women and families take the brunt of damage done by a paternalistic culture that excuses men from taking real responsibility. I felt the character were quite well- developed with the exception of Maya. I just didn't get her. I mean I got that she was immature but why she married Adrian in the first place puzzled me and, of course, what I mentioned in another post about why she hid the emails. That made no sense to me, especially in the context of her immaturity.

I really did enjoy this book even though the first two wives seemed unrealistically tolerant, and Adrian was so unlikable. I liked the way the author showed that children react in different ways to divorce, and may not show their true feelings readily. The story line was strong: I didn't want to put the book down. I do think this would make a good movie.

I think the strengths of The Third Wife are the character development and the suspenseful plot. I liked how the reader was left to form her own judgement about why Maya died and whether Adrian really has changed. I haven't read anything else by Lisa Jewel, but I would like to.

I wasn't too hot to read this book..thought it would be a beach read but I was wrong. I thought the plot was strong and kept those pages turning, I read it in one day when I should have been doing other things but couldn't put it down! The character development was terrific..made me care about the people and what would happen to them. I would have liked to know more about what was going on in the heads of the first two wives who seemed to accept the extended family and we did get some of that information but would have like an epilogue area about them and how they thought the kids were doing.
Really terrific book!

RE: What did you see as the strengths/weaknesses of the book?

I had a hard time at the beginning as I at first thought that it would be primarily a chick lit book, then I thought it might be a murder mystery with Jane but then as I got deeper onto it I realized it was a deeper study of a family and how divorce might affect the children. I especially liked the characters and they dealt with Adrian. I have not read others by Jewell, but put some on library reserve. I will recommend the book to my friends who like books by Moriarty.
