One of Dora Jackson’s beliefs is that "what we call miracles is just what's supposed to happen." What seemingly miraculous events occur in the novel? Do you believe miracles are possible?

I'd like to believe miracles are possible. I hope they are. It sure seemed like a miracle occurred when Richmond placed Odette under the wrong tree. According to science, the doctors, she shouldn't have lived through the day. To go from that diagnosis to feeling like she could walk in such a short period of time is pretty miraculous. Even Eleanor thought she was a goner.

I think that it depends on how you define a miracle. If one is looking for someone to walk on water or turn water to wine they will be very disappointed. The birth of my children was certainly a miracle; at times, just waking up everyday can be a miracle. I agree with everyone here. You have to be open and believe

Miracles are possible - they just aren't always what we expect them to be. We may not prevent a loved one from dying but there might be something else that seems miraculous. (Let me digree for a moment and recommend a book written by a female physician: To Heaven and Back - - and pay attention to a scene having to do with a pear tree in the latter part of the book) I definitely agree with Suzanne. Miracles are not the domain of only one faith/religion.

I think miracles are possible, but not probable. The laws of nature apply to things that happen in our world, and I believe they happen for a scientific reason more than they do for a "religious" reason. And those happenings may not be explainable by scientists...yet.
