Ghosts appear throughout the novel. What does Odette’s mother’s voice add to the story?

What an "character" this character proved to be! She vividly fills in the voids-family histories, relationships, and past events- with such flair. She also provides a bit of comic relief when situations
become emotional and strained. I especially appreciated the way she handles the near death of her daughter-her outlook on gaining a child to heaven was particularly soothing. Like most good mamas, she was "all- knowing."

I agree with Debra. I think Odette's mother provides comic relief and insight into the history of the town and the families. She is also practical and I think this shows where Odette gets her strength and determination. I don't think all of it comes from being born in a tree.

What woman doesn't live with her mother's voice in her head? With this device the author could let us know whether Odette was listening to herself or her mother. At the same time you got to see what a loving relationship they had enjoyed and continued to enjoy. It did add a light touch at the same time.
