When things get tough for the Supremes they're often able to see the funny side of the worst moments. How does humor help them survive the hard times? How does it help us all?

In the midst of tragedy humor seems to invariably prevail. I believe it is a natural instinct to laugh at seemingly inappropriate times. I was reminded of two uncomfortable instances from my youth as I read. One was being sent to the principal's office, along with a two friends, for what we felt was a minor transgression. When we were confronted by the principal we both broke into uncontrollable laughter, which took him completely off guard. I don't recall any disciplinary action. The second situation is embarrassing to admit since it involved the premature death of my friend's mother when we were in the seventh grade. At the viewing my friend's uncle made an awkward attempt at conversation, which sent my friend and I into paroxysms of laughter. He was in the midst of profound grief and I in the grip of sincere sympathy, but we couldn't control ourselves. I look back at the incident with a sense of shame but with the realization that humor was probably a natural release mechanism for us at that time.
