"That was what you did in America. You started at low wages toiling for somebody else, but with hard work, in a year or two, you could have employees working for you." How possible was this then? What about now?

Ana thinks to herself "That was what you did in America. You started at low wages toiling for somebody else, but with hard work, in a year or two, you could have employees working for you." (p 52) How possible was this part of the American Dream for most people in the mid-19th century? Do you think it’s any more or less achievable today? Why or why not?

I think there was opportunity to attain a better life , but certainly more difficult for those of color or those who spoke with an accent.

Today, many baby boomers are products of parents who strived to give us a better life and to emphasize the importance of an education. Our parents instilled in us a strong work ethic. For those not so fortunate, it is more difficult to reach a higher standard of living. If you are struggling to provide food on the table and a warm place to sleep, it is hard to do all the extras they children need.

Not quite as easy as it sounds! Not then probably and not now. But generation after generation of folks from around the world have come here and started as low-income workers. For some, it has been a stepping stone to a much better life. It does seem, historically, that that path has been harder for some.

From the statement of Ana's perhaps it was easier back then while I am not expert of that aspect of society back then I think it is over optimistic view. Today, if you educated or skilled immigrant especially if you are hired into a position you have a chance to make your own career path unfortunately this does not included laborers or unskilled workers.

For some people this is true. All depends on skill set of people involved.

I think it was easier back then. Our current institutions and tax system do not favor those trying to make their way from nothing to something. Becoming part of the middle class these days is not as easy as it was a generation or two ago. I know my own children are struggling, and they have excellent educations.

I think this is a myth. Yes if you work hard, you may get ahead and you may not. Especially if you are from a marginalized community.

This was/true for some people. Depends on where they settle in the US, their skills, and, sadly, their heritage. Some people are welcomed with open arms, while others experience rejection.

For freed slaves and immigrants,it was not easy to move up to better jobs. It depended on their skills, their drive to make a better life, who they knew and what prejudices they encountered. It is still true today that it is not easy for everyone to move up to a better life. Those with little education, physical or mental disabilities are more challenged. Prejudices still exist, but to a lesser degree today.
