Ana thinks to herself that Lincoln "was born in a time and place where race prejudice was learned early on" (p.322) yet he overcame his biases. How do you think we can identify our own prejudices, and how do we become more tolerant?

Prejudice is always learned early on. You aren't born with bias but, rather, it is learned. It will always be the way of humans, sadly. Becoming more tolerant means being less afraid (hostile) of people/things we don't understand or can't relate to and more open to looking beyond the exterior.

I have found that traveling and visiting other cultures have broadened my views and helped me understand more about people who are different from me. In teaching at a community college, some students were from different cultures, but many had never traveled out of state. Those students had some difficulty understanding how others could think so differently.

I've thought about this issue a lot in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. I grew up in a very prejudiced household, but I thought that I was pretty unbiased myself. I felt that through education I'd learned to treat all people equally, and I think I'd fooled myself into believing the country no longer had a problem after the election of Barak Obama. The recent debate really opened my eyes to the fact that racism is still rampant. In a lot of ways it's more subtle than it used to be, but it's definitely still there.
And yet, when I've tried to talk about what I'd learned with others, I found many who were unwilling to even try to understand.
So, I guess for me the key is to try to keep an open mind about issues, try to see both sides and understand where the other opinion is coming from, and to educate oneself as much as possible about all the angles (rather than just cherry-picking the parts of the argument one agrees with).

Recognize that fear of the unknown and fear of those different than ourselves is just that - fear. To overcome fear we must educate ourselves and see every other human being as our fellow man. I came upon a quote recently that I can’t quite remember, but something along the lines of we are all the same in unique ways.
