Amory faces many challenges in her life: her father's attack, the assault at the Maroon St march, the death of Sholto, her medical condition in 1977. Where did you feel for her most keenly?

I felt for Amory most keenly in her relationship with Sholto because she seemed to have finally found a mutually satisfying relationship and marriage until Sholto's war trauma experiences became a problem and seriously impacted the family's life.

I felt for her most strongly when she is assaulted at the Maroon St March. I felt she understated the trauma and slow recovery process in a very stoic way. It showed her bravery.
It is also very sad when Sholto's alcoholism becomes apparent. I felt very concerned that the two key men in her life - father and husband - had both been so traumatised by the two wars.

I felt most strongly for Amory when she returns from Viet Nam and realizes that something is not right with her daughter. She makes it her mission to track down her daughter and to see for herself what is happening to her. I believe this is the first time that Amory acts on her own, without the prodding of a male. She does find her daughter living in California and even though she does not think it is the best place for her, she allows her daughter to live her own life.
