Would Charbonneau and Amory have stayed together if she had been able to have children?

I don't think so--on the one hand, I think they amuse each other and are friends with benefits, before that expression existed. On the other hand, I think they bored each other. They lasted as long as they did because they were apart for long periods of time. He would have been content to go on with the benefits part even after marriage but Amory would not have been the only side dish. He, in the meantime, would have lasted for her until the next man came along--oh, wait, Sholto WAS already in the wings.

No, their relationship was too superficial to endure beyond intermittent periods of good food and conversation. I think having children was important to Charbonneau but there were other considerations that led him to marry another woman including financial gain and that Amory was in love with someone else.

No, I don't believe their relationship ever reached the level of discussing children. It was very surface based mainly on going out, eating and drinking and of course sex. They probably lasted as long as they did because they led independent lives and were apart a great deal of the time.

I agree with what others are saying. I don't think children were part of the equation. They were friends with benefits, a friendly face to have dinner with when in town. They enjoyed good food, conversation, and sex.
