During a sightseeing boat trip in Paris, Alice "watch[es],with a mixture of horror and delight, as one of the women, still with a glass of red wine in one hand, pulled up her skirts to reveal purple bloomers and danced alone on the deck." Discuss how Alice is frequently pulled between social propriety and Bohemian freedom? Does her character evolve over the course of the novel?

Her strong desire to be married seems to be her main social interest, but she is impatient, immature, and easily led astray by the Bohemian temptations she constantly finds. I was surprised that toward the end she showed some sensitivity toward Cait, finally figuring out the attraction between Cait and Emile.

Like many women of her time and class, Alice is obsessed with "the perfect marriage". She is interested in the bohemian life, but does not understand why any woman would wish to deviate from her "lot in life". Gradually, she realized a little of the allure for many women, but was immature and in a hurry to marry well.

I think Alice felt the pressure to marry well and was too immature to see her other options. I was surprised that she recognized the attraction between Cait and Emile. She seemed so worried about her future I didn't think she noticed anyone else.

Her eyes opened in Paris to a society that she had never before experienced. She saw it as fun and exiting for a young girl. But when she was taken advantage of by this freedom, she began to realize that there was no future or security in it.

Alice was young and naive, and probably lived a sheltered life in Scotland. She didn't have a mother to teach her anything about social life and its restrictions. She never had to make decisions for herself, so when she was in Paris, she could , but had no real understanding of what was happening around her. All young girls are intrigued but a lifestyle that appears to be freer and more open and exciting, she just didn't see it for how it would effect her goals for finding the perfect match.
