How do you think Article 13 impacted Emily's views. Do you see any correlation between this and how we experience racism today?

Emily lived in a state that declared it illegal for black people to live, work, or even visit. (Article 13 of Indiana's 1851 Constitution: "No negro or mulatto shall come into or settle in the State, after the adoption of this Constitution.") Do you think this helped or hindered her understanding of slavery and the growth of her abolitionist beliefs? Do you see any correlation between this lack of exposure to people of a different race and how we experience racism today?

Article 13 reinforced the state efforts to isolate races from each other. Emily had absolutely no opportunity as a rural resident of Indiana to meet black people or learn anything about them. She as essentially in a vacuum, but with no influence either way she saw the horror of owning a human being. When she had the opportunity to get to observe black individuals she observed they were like her in their needs and desires. The lack of contact with different races and cultures generally creates suspicion and fear. An “us versus them” attitude develops which is the root cause of current racism. Those effects are reinforced by poverty.

Totally agree; I think it's an important point you brought up about how poverty can reinforce the "us vs them" mentality, and how that can fuel feelings of resentment and racism.

I would elaborate more on your point by saying that isolation is definitely one correlation between racism then and how we experience it today. When different communities are isolated from one another, either from a forced separation or some other reason, this perpetuates the ignorance that often accompanies racism.
