Imagine you are Cussy. How would you feel leaving Troublesome for good?

Terrified.

A person would think leaving Troublesome Creek would be a good thing; however, it is the only place she's know. There's comfort in knowing what to expect, who to avoid, how to handle certain circumstances. Moving to an unknown is never easy and sometimes dangerous.

I think Cussy would be frightened to go off to unknown parts. However, the letters from Queenie do give her hope that there is a better life out there. Once her father passed, there was little holding her to this spot. However there is always a soft spot in our hearts for what we recognize as Home. I do think Cussy would leave in a minute, if she knew it would help Honey and give her a better life and if she could be with her husband and her books.

Troublesome Creek is still home to Cussy and she is leaving behind people she loves both living and dead. She loves this land and all the critters that live there. It is frightening to leave all you know behind.

It is hard to leave your home and your memories. I left Seattle in 1976. When people asked me where I lived I would tell them but then add I was born and raised in Seattle. After 30+ years I no longer add that! But I still love Seattle. I think leaving Troublesome for. Cussy will be good. She and her husband need to be together.

Hopeful anxiety. Queenie leaves and Cussy admires her for her strength, character and intellect. Queenie knows she can find a better place for her and her family and she executes her plan and leaves. Cussy is courageous in her own way and I think she might have eventually struck out on her own after her father died even had she not married Jackson. There is, I believe , always a hope for a better life and that hope drove the expansion of civilization for years. It still does, people move from country to country, state to state and town to town looking to improve their lives.

With no immediate family left in Troublesome, leaving would be easy. Friends and current family are waiting. Nothing is there for her that could possibly keep her there.
Leaving home for a strange place where there are no friends, no family, and sometimes unexpected strange customs, is terrifying. It changes you. Long after all else had evened out, the food and the vegetation will remain a loss for which you will be nostalgic, but making good friends in the new place helps make your new family.

I think it would be hard to leave a familiar place, but I think Cussy would be excited to start a life with Jackson

I would be afraid of the unknown and fearful of the same terrible treatment. However, she had support and strength through her love and life with Jackson. I would also be concerned that Honey would be accept4d and have a better life than I'd had growing up.

I think things might be worse for her. Queenie could fit in in Philadelphia but Cussy would stand out even more. In Troublesome, at least people had some experience of Blues. People would probably think of her as a freak in other places.

I would be excited about leaving Troublesome for good. She is with a man who loves her and a baby she adores. My hope would be that they would move to a part of the country that is more accepting of differences and where Cussy could be a librarian or still participate with the pack mule librarians.

Knowing Cussy's good heart, she has to have mixed feelings: Thrilled to be starting a life with her new husband and baby Honey, but worried about her new husband's fate; relieved to be able to get away from the hate, narrow-mindedness, and the just recently passed expansion of the miscegenation law, but sad to leave her patrons and concerned about what will happen to them, but knowing that she is leaving them in good hands with the new male pack horse librarian.
