The relationship between the sisters was much like the relationship I have with my sisters. We have a huge distance between us. They were resentful of my having opportunities they never had. But with age the resentment is lessening and I find myself now enjoying talking with them.

I was confused with the switch between past and present at the beginning. After awhile, however, I began to look forward to Tomoe's story and the history that I was learning. At the end, I think this vehicle was very effective in presenting the historical information. I probably would not have picked up a book about feudal Japan, but I learned a lot by reading this book, and I concluded that there is much that can be learned from history which impacts our current lives.

Like the novel, my sister and I have not been close, ever, but when our mother was in the nursing home with Alzheimer's, we began to act as a team regarding her needs. I admired the way Drew and Rachel came together to find out more about their mother's history.
