All but three of the characters were caring in some way, even the group of women who headed to Kate’s home. Prudence, Roy, and Roy’s play toy had few redeeming qualities. Billy had a good heart; however, he lost his chance to pursue the woman he loved by his false actions. Such is life...choices...

There are a few characters who show a great capacity for love. Among them are Sadie, Kate, Eli, Marris and Birdie. The way Birdie watches out for Sadie and Kate shows her deep caring for others, not to mention the records she keeps on the town and its people. Marris watches over Gladys even when she's cruel and dismissive. Her heart bleeds for poor Sadie. And Eli cares for everyone in town, including his own sister, the most uncaring character of the book--Prudence.

I found this book, to be a book of love not violence. Most of the characters were very capable of giving love. Sadie Blue, in all she was enduring wanted to help Kate with the school, Marris, who did not have an easy life, still helped anyone who needed help and never gave up on her friend Gladys. Eli continued to care about his parish, and to try to help everyone. Kate came to this strange mountain and continued to feed and educate her students while educating herself to survive on this mountain. And Birdie who cared about all the people, the wildlife and the animals, writing it all down so someday when necessary her truths could be passed on to the next healer.
