What role did Tattler Swann play in the book? Was he a good spokesman for Jerome Biddle? If so, why?

Tattler was the stereotypical character of the Appalachian area, uneducated and lazy. He had good qualities up to a point. He protected Birdie during ginseng hunting and Jerome when the men were hunting him down for the supposed baby killing. He knew Jerome was a bit odd, but also only knew him to be a kind person. I was surprised that he so easily came to believe that Jerome could be guilty of killing a baby and running off with the remains. If it weren't for that situation, he would have been Jerome's best spokesperson.

Tattle was a boy who lived by his wits and chose sides by instinct. Birdie was his teacher and mentor and in return he helped her in any way he could. He knew Jerome to be a kind man and simply knew he would not kill a baby.

The character, Tattler Swann, plays a lesser role in this novel, but I enjoyed him immensely. A "simple" man who relies on the earth and nature for his existence, he shows us clearly the value of his sort of learning. Kate came to teach the children and provide "book learning", and in our society this is sometimes the only kind of learning we value. Tattler, who truly knew who he was and what he liked and wanted, reveals a different kind of smart. He's clever and honest respectful and loyal. In addition, he provides for himself and survives - knows how he got this way and applauds those he learned from. Not so simple at all, and maybe in today's world we could use more of him.

Tatter Swann was a young boy who truly represented Appalachia. His teacher was nature. He was 'simple", but had what we would call "Street smarts". He knew how to survive on the mountain. He knew good from bad and recognized the good and the evil people. He learned a lot from Birdie and helped her when she needed help. He understood Biddle and was smart enough to help him.
