Could you identify with Evangeline? Have you ever been swept away by circumstances beyond your control?

I could identify with Evangeline because there were moments in my younger life when I did things without realizing the ramifications and they could have gone really badly. Fortunately, they didn't.

I felt so much sorrow for Evangeline and cant imagine the life she had. Reading stories like these that are based on history make me so thankful for the blessed life I have. Circumstances like hers are truly hard to imagine.

I went to college in the 70’s and became engaged to a fellow student. I dropped out and enrolled in a business college so I could get a job and support us while he finished his degree. Just before I completed my business college courses, we split up. I didn’t feel like I could return to college so I used my business school certificate and got a job. Not exactly ‘circumstances beyond my control’ but I was certainly pressured for all the decisions I made at that time.

I have to say that I couldn’t really identify with Evangeline - She was lucky to have gotten her position and then threw it away with a rash decision. Admittedly, she was young and in love and thought he (can’t remember his name) would stick by her. But then I guess I have too much common sense and am not a risk taker. In this case, her “risk” forever changed (and ended) her life, although a baby was born of it.

Definitely! I believe love (and lust), lasting or fleeting, can do that to anyone. Everyone I’ve ever talked to can recount a story from their younger days that was dangerous, reckless, or just plain stupid. Evangeline was a great character who helped show how one small mistake- especially for women- can have lasting effects.

Definitely can identify with her. I have been in similar circumstances, I believe you trust someone until you have reason not too. She was very young and in love, there was no reason she woud have known differently.
