What do you think of Gloria's character? How would you describe Ginny's feelings toward her? How is Gloria perceived differently through Ginny's eyes and the other adults' eyes?

I think Gloria is a terribly flawed, selfish person who should not be responsible for children. That being said, I thought she was written true to her character throughout. Ginny recognized her mother's flaws and issues, but she was willing to look past them for Krystal. Once she saw Krystal could take care of herself, she stood up to Gloria and said no. It was a brave thing to do.

In Ginny's special way she saw Gloria the same as the other adults "totally unreliable ". She only wanted to get back to Gloria for Baby Doll, when reality finally set in, she knew Maura was a better choice.

Ginny's feelings towards Gloria were driven only by her unrelenting focus on her baby sister. Removing Ginny from her care was clearly the right decision as Ginny is an addict prone to physical and mental abuse, and neglect of her children. The other adults' perception of Gloria was spot on.

Gloria is a selfish individual, one who uses her children for her own benefit - or hopes to at any rate. She is not competent or reliable on any level and Ginny, in spite of her age and autism, knows this about her.

I didn't think she perceived differently as much as she wanted her little sister to be cared for. She was so afraid that she would be forgotten. Gloria was obviously a sick woman and I thin Gnny realized this. It wasn't her mother she wanted, it was her little sister.

The author was pretty accurate in developing Gloria's character as a troubled and immature person who really had no business having children. Ginny saw her birth mother as a means to save her baby sister only. She also felt that it was necessary to sacrifice her own safety to do it.

Gloria is a woman barely holding on, with Crystal as her life raft. I do think she loves her children, but her drug use and poor choices are toxic to them. Based on the details of her family in the book, I think Gloria has a very dysfunctional family and did the best she could given her addiction. I believe Ginny truly loves her, but is beginning to understand that it is not okay to live with physical and emotional abuse. The other adults despise Gloria for what she did to Ginny and are unforgiving and absolute in their resolve to keep her away. Ginny, however, still has unsettled issues that needed to be resolved in order for her to move forward, in particular the welfare of her "Baby Doll." It is not until the end of the book that Ginny begins to understand that Gloria is responsible for many of the hardships she endured.

Gloria is a woman ruled by her addiction - I just feel sorry for her - not an evil person but certainly someone who has been ruined by her life. Again, I'm not sure Ginny has real feelings. She has reactions and her reactions to Gloria are driven by her responsibility to her baby sister. The other adults see her for who she is, irresponsible, unstable, addicted - Ginny sees her as the person that will bring her back to her baby doll.

I got the impression that Gloria felt a child was something you "owned"..She acted like she thought it was up to Ginny and her sister to figure out how to take care of themselves. In Ginny's eyes a mother was a mother who did everything
Possible to take of her to the best of their ability and I think Ginny wanted so badly to see the good in her mom because she was the mom.
