We can only hope that each generation learns from the wisdom of the past generation, and from their mistakes. Anyone living through the 1960’s realizes how awful the holocaust was, how slowly civil rights issues pertaining to minorities have been addressed, and how the poor handling of all these issues gave rise to some of today’s injustices.

I agree with Anni. Self-righteous and self-perpetuating classes of people do so much damage to the broader America.

The author brings the past into the present on a larger global scale and a very personal, family scale. We all are interested in how our families evolved and their past actions.
