How does the author establish the similarities between the different members of the Milton family across generations? In particular, how are Evie and Min shown to be their mother's daughters?

The only similarity I could see was that they were under-developed as characters. I wanted more from each of them...more humanity. Moss was the closest thing to a flesh and blood human being.

I think the general values of the grandparents were being instilled in the children and grandchildren - but as the times were changing so was the willingness of the younger generations to abide by the strict WASP rules - the children were exposed to other ways of doing things and for some it no longer made sense to behave like their parents.

The similarities between the members of the Milton family come out through the tradition of owning and using the island. The financial issues throw a monkey wrench into those traditions, not at all unusual in today’s world.
