How do you think Linda feels about Leo? Why does she reveal she was watching him the night they spent in Duluth?

In Duluth, when Linda wakes up, Paul and Patra are gone, and she is alone with Leo. Leo attempts to engage her in a theological conversation. When Linda feels angry and embarrassed, she lets Leo know that she was spying on him while he and Patra got intimate the night before. How do you think Linda feels about Leo? Why does she reveal she was watching him the previous night?

I think that she didn't feel he was worthy of Patra and sensed there was something wrong with him.

I agree with what the reader said above - that Linda did not feel these two adults were a good match, that something seemed "off." At the same time, it was kind of creepy that Linda continued to watch when it was obviously a private sexual act that was taking place. Then again, Linda is not exactly totally normal.

I had the sense she didn't really trust him or like him. He interfered with her relationship with Petra and Paul he held an importance in Petra's mind that Linda didn't have to compete with when he was not there. Also, she is not familiar with a couple acting as Petra and Leo do - she does not see this behavior with her parents. She is at an age where she is naturally curious.

I agree with susiej. I think Linda considered herself to have a special, private relationship with Patra and Paul, and Leo got in the way of that. I think she revealed her observation of Leo and Patra because it gave her a sense of power over him. I think also she considered him to be too familiar - too hands-on, if you will, with her without her having given him permission. This shows up at the end of the book when she confronts Patra outside of the court house.

I, too, agree with susiej. Perhaps she felt that if she created an uncomfortable situation with him, he would go away again.

Linda does not like Leo. Leo's presence interferes with Linda's relationship with Paul and Patra. She doesn't like the way he lectures and tries to correct and teach Paul. Patra becomes more childlike when Leo is around. She reveals she was watching him to shift the balance of power in their relationship.

Linda had a good thing going with Patra & Paul. She fit into their family structure - something she never had experienced. When Leo showed up it disrupted this fine balance. Everything changed for Linda. She no longer had her role - she was an outsider once again. Patra became more & more childlike & although it was never spelled out she was a victim of abuse - mental if nothing else - Patra did have choices but failed to act on them; Linda did also. Linda did not like or trust Leo; why would she? She watched him partly from fear, partly from curiosity, partly for that sex scene, partly because that's what someone like Linda would do.

Linda was intimidated by Leo. He would become very preachy with Paul, Patra and herself. He had put her on the spot questioning her and would not stop He was being cruel, she was embarrassed by what she did not know. She was finally able to shut him up, by embarrassing him. I really felt myself saying "Good for you, Linda".

I think Leo threatened the security of the relationship Linda had with Paul and Patra. He was a predator, preying on the close pack the three of them had created while Paul was in Hawaii. Paul operated at a higher intellectual level, while Linda was beginning to learn to trust feelings. As a result, she was put off by his behavior and attitudes. I think Linda revealed that she had been watching to put Leo in his place. He was attempting to exert his superiority, and she let him know that she had seem him in a very submissive and powerless position. She had seen him when someone else had been in control.
