When Linda confronts Lily about making up what happened with Mr. Grierson, Lily very casually admits that she did make it up. Why do you think Linda is interested in what happened between Lily and Mr. Grierson? How do you think Linda feels about the lie, and do you think her opinion of Lily changes over the course of the book?

I think that Linda was vicariously interested in the relationship as her life was devoid of physicality.

Who knows? That seems very strange to me? Is she jealous? Did she want Mr. Grierson to be interested in her?

Linda is fourteen at this point in her life - her sexuality and curiosity about it is in bloom. What is there in her real life at home or with Patra and Paul and Leo at that juncture that can explain or satisfy that. This aspect of the book helps to show us how vacuous her life is in so many ways. She is attracted to this man and this girl because they are so different from her - or appear to be, that is - and the diversion they create, but also, there is judgment made about them without knowing all the facts by those judging just as there is judgment made about Paul's death at the trial. Is this event - Mr. Grierson and Lily - meant to foreshadow what is to come for Linda?

I don't know - I completely lost interest during the confusing storyline & didn't think the author developed the novel or the characters in such a way to draw me into the story. I know all that about Linda being lonely, raised by dysfunctional family, loss of her imagined family, no one caring one way or another about her...but this thing with Lily just made me want to put the book down & not return.

Lily was another character whose life story seemed to lack some development, but then, this community of disturbed people would be missing coping skills in the first place. At times I think Linda wavered between sympathy and a slight feeling of kinship ("hey, neither of us is really accepted with our peers here in school"), and then ultimately there seemed to have been some envy that Lily used her accusation of the teacher as a way change her life and to escape her past - albeit in a small way.
