RE: How do you think Dov influences the ...

The relationship between Dov and Sadie is very complex and a little twisted. I understand why Dov wants to keep in touch with Sadie, as a very successful former student. she makes him feel part of her success. I am surprised that Sadie still want a relationship with Dov. I would think she would want that part of her life to be over once she escapes from his dominance.

I think Dov helped Sadie focus on creating art rather than just slapping something together. Although she had some compelling ideas, it seems her strength was creating the backdrop against which the action happened.

I confess I didn't understand her continued need to stay in contact. He was cruel, sadistic, and dishonest with her about his marriage. I'd say she valued his professional opinion, but it seems like her skills surpassed his relatively early on.

Dov, well, perhaps he had a sense of pride that one of his students was so accomplished.

Dov - pride that he was partially responsible for her success and possibly still some desire to control her.
Sadie - the desire to receive praise from her teacher and the fact that he believed in her abilities and encouraged her when women were still a real minority in this field.
Their relationship was so unhealthy in many ways and as I think about her future I hope that she does not get sucked back into a relationship with him.

I didn't like Dov. I thought he was a bad influence and hurtful. His influence may have helped Sadie trust Sam.

I agree with LS
Dov was in love with Sadie’s brilliance. I believe she reminded him of himself when he was young. Sadie in return craved the creative support and validation that Dov gave her but their relationship was built on lies and dominance so not a healthy relationship.

Dov validates her excellence in developing games. But then would keep her in her place with cruelty and dominance. Then he gives her the gift of taking over classes. It is a cruel game with him. Throughout the book I felt Sadie had self-esteem issues. Sadie will break from Dov when she has resolved her worthiness.
