Interesting question. While slavery is not a question in today's America, the abuse of some men towards women is an ongoing problem. I've seen women cling to their marriages in spite of abusive relationships for various reasons and I've seen women struggle in their lives in spite of a divorce with the very men they've divorced. I am not trying to say that all men are controlling but there are still those that see their wives as property.

I think there are still women who are afraid to leave abusive relationships. The number of unwed, young mothers is also an issue, and while it may not be the result of rape/slavery, I think there are many young girls playing at sex and hoping for lasting love and a secure marriage or long term partner at least.

Pregnancy, therefore abortions, have always been a part of each and every generation. Pregnancy before marriage has and will always be an issue. People are going to have opinions on both. Sarah made a choice in this book that would still be very controversial today. I think any woman can certainly relate to many of these predicaments. Women have to make decisions based on their own values.

I think the theme of not being accepted because of color has modern parallels.

Yes, there is still slavery today in the United States. I just read an on-line FBI report that said human sex trafficking is the most common form of modern day slavery.
