I feel that, clearly, the main theme is the horror of human slavery and man's inhumanity to man. After all, our country not only had slavery but African slave families broken up and sold separately so that they couldn't even find solace in some semblance of family. There is also a theme of women of any race being Second-class citizens.

There are a number of themes in this book. The role of women, importance of education, Racism in America,
Injustice, overcoming adversity and fear, to name a few. I think the author wanted to include all of these themes because she wanted her readers to think about these important issues. Each issue is timeless, and something she probably feels strongly about. Marlen Suyapa Bodden's short bio states that she is a lawyer for the nation's largest law firm for the poor. She deals with injustice, human rights issues, domestic abuse, and racism all the time. This first novel was, in my opinion, a way to educate people about these ongoing problems.

I believe the overall theme in the story is the need for men to control their women and their women's need for security in their relationships. Thankfully in today's world that is changing. Women are better educated and
can provide for themselves better financially-not all can do this but the idea is getting more prevalent. The mothers and daughters in the story are similar on both levels--proterctive and informative.
