Sam believes that "to play requires trust and love," and in one interview states, "There is no more intimate act than play, even sex." What do you think he means? Do you agree with him? Do you think this is different if you’re playing a board game vs. a video or online game?

Having little interest in video games, I can only respond to "other" games which are dependent on the other player(s). If you play with someone who is not a good sport, you quickly lose interest in playing any game with them. The same must be true for video games.

If someone is your teammate a certain degree of trust is needed but I don’t think you need to love your teammate to play a game and enjoy it. I don’t think either is needed if you’re playing against someone, unless your opponent is a cheater.

Maybe by love you mean the love of the game, you certainly need that to enjoy playing together. Trust that those playing will be fair and not be judgmental, certainly as you're not going to be perfect and you won’t always know the answers. I think the online/video aspect certainly ups the ante as you are playing with strangers so there is that vulnerability aspect of trust.

I do think trust is needed. In any game, you trust the other individual will follow the rules. You also trust that they'll do their best to win (if on your side, be a partner, if opposing you, to not simply let you win). But no, I don't think love is required, not even love of the game as suggested by jos. I don't think you even necessarily have to like each other. I recently watched a Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon was out for revenge against his "enemy" Wil Wheaton.

I think the biggest difference in playing online video games with others is that you can be anonymous or even invent an entirely new persona for yourself. On the one hand that might increase personal enjoyment, but on the other it could distance you more from others.

I think trust is important when playing a game. Rules need to be followed, so there is a level playing field...in board or video games.

Play requires trust. The best analogy I can think of is with rescued animals - whether wildlife or domestic. If the animals do not trust you, they won't play. Trust is not as big of an issue with the anonymous online games. However, if one is placing bets, then you have to trust that the company is honest - and the undercover reports have plenty of stories along those lines.

I do think that you need to trust who you are playing with so that it is fair, but I don’t think love needs to be involved. You need to trust your opponent and believe that he is following the rules.

I think trust is important when playing team games. I don't know much about video games, but they seem to be so much more designed for individual play. I've watched my grandson play for great lengths of time, totally rapt and concentrated. He plays the way I read.
