Does the revival of "vintage" goods hold appeal for you? Do we have a special place in our hearts for the "good old days"?

"...somehow that all this country stuff that people didn’t want today, milk-glass darning eggs and butter churns and whatnot, they’d come to want a few years down the road."

Does the revival of "vintage" goods hold appeal for you as well? Does that same phenomenon lend a more special appeal to this book? Do we have a special place in our hearts for the "good old days?" Why?

There's something very rose-colored about nostalgia. When we retell stories and events from the past, we often tend to overlook the negatives. Recently we went to an old Shaker village in New Hampshire and the girls and I were amazed at how quaint the old cooking utensils looked. I sometimes do long for simpler times but I realize that one can't filter out only the good and the bad and take only the good. I

The good old days are a lot better when you look back. I can remember the ice man coming and all the kids running out to get a piece of ice--also, the milk bottles left on the front step. It was certainly more convenient than running to the store!

Vintage goods hold no appeal to me. I am a person that always looks forward. I don't dwell on the past at all but continually look forward.

Yes, I love 'vintage" goods. One might say that I'm an antique nut--from homes (mine was built in the 18C), to furniture, to clothing--you name it; I love it. If only some of these articles from the past could talk; wouldn't that be interesting? I love history!

I see a return to "vintage" ways in many places in my southern town. People are raising chickens and bees, growing vegetables and fruits, canning and "putting up" produce, seeking out "yard eggs" and free-range chicken, and grassfed beef and pork, homemade breads, locally produced butter, locally sourced milk, cream, and cheese - all KINDS of things. I think this return to things we can control ourselves - or choose ourselves - or know exactly what's IN the things we eat - is a reaction to the fast pace, information overload, and general craziness in our world today. Simpler times have great appeal to many people, I think, and "vintage" is a way of embracing that simplicity.

Only if I could pick and choose. I love antiques and the history surrounding them. My daughter and I have a great deal of fun growing a vegetable garden and canning jams and jellies. However, we do this for fun not survival. I do like the idea though of slowing down to a simpler life style.

I am very interesed in "vintage" goods from a curiosity standpoint. Some of the old stuff, especially old books, are fascinating to me. There are many things from the good old days not to like as well such as the racism/segregation and working conditions in factories, but i think the thing that most appeals about the old days is the lack of distractions. Distractions such as computers, cell phones, video games and television. i think these are all things that take away from human interaction and also suck away vast amounts of time. Of course, maybe it's just me.

One of my favorite jewelry lines is called Grandmother's Buttons -- she converts old antique buttons into jewelry. A part of me likes that the stuff has a history associated with it. I agree with Jeff in that the "old" times seem much more calming in a way. I definitely do not care for the racism or lack of opportunities for women then but the appeal is in unplugging. Of course we can always romanticize it all now. I remember my grandmother did not enjoy laundry Mondays--lol!

The answers to this question are interesting. But, I believe that I like Jeffs' the best. We do tend to romanticize "the old days." I believe, for example, that I had a better time growing up than many children do today. There was no need for "play dates;" we played outside in the neighborhood with our pals.....baseball at an empty lot, kick the can in the street, paperdolls on the living room floor.........life was simple. We could spend the day at the park swimming pool and our parents didn't worry about us. There were the down sides too. Yes, gas was 19 cents a gallon, but it took a long time to earn that 19 cents. My husband and I, with the children, would go for a Sunday drive and stop for ice cream cones, IF we had money for the gas and the ice cream. Credit cards were unheard of, we lived within our means and those means were often small. Nostalgic for "vintage" goods? Maybe. Nostalgic for a slower, simpler way of life, probably.

I do have a nostalgic interest but when I think of the many modern conveniences, such as air conditioning for one, that I could not do without I realize it is just the feeling of vintage I am attracted to. I don't think there life was without problems, family abuses etc, they were just kept in house, but I do think people were more satisfied with simpler things. Neighborhoods for onne were a wonderful thing as were family members living close by. That I do miss.

I generally focus on the now and future, but with a sincere appreciation for the past as it has impacted events of today. I believe as day to day life becomes more of a global village, faster paced and friends are sometime "electronic" relationships many more people long for a simplier time and appreciate vintage goods.

I love the idea of vintage goods, and stories of the good old days- both my version of the good times for me, and the stories I grew up with from my parent's generation which became a part of my vision of the past. I think its great, and we all do, take a part of the vintage days and carry it with us in ur hearts. it helps form us in our lives, but ultimately the good old days ae only snippets of what we want them to be.
