Ania thinks to herself that people have children "even when they believe the world is going to hell, even when life is nothing but uncertainty" in hopes of someday being understood. Do you agree?

I think people have children to have someone to care for and someone to keep their legacy alive. No one wants to think that everything "ends" with them. These children will hopefully understand us and pass that understanding on giving us a reason for being alive in the first place.

Realistically, in her day, many people had children because they didn't have a choice. And for women in Nazi Germany, being exhorted to be fruitful and multiply for the Fuhrer, that was especially true. But Ania's observation goes to the heart of what many women feel when they approach motherhood, when they do have a choice, certainly: the hope of an intimate, deep connection with another human being, with someone who is (so it seems) an extension of oneself. A love as deep as what we hopefully feel for a mate. I know I felt that. There's the risk, of course, that you might not recognize or accept that this young person is really separate from you, with a mind of his or her own, and maybe not appreciative of what you consider to be your legacy.

I agree that people keep having children during bad times in order the extent their legacies. They may be afraid that they might be forgotten once they are gone. Their children will assure that they will be remembered.

I think children are hope even in bad times and give hope in a terrible situation

There is nothing more beautiful and pure than a baby. In times of war and other tragedy, a baby represents love and life. I don't believe women have children because there is war or the world is going to hell. But I do think that during a tragic time, knowing that new life is within provides a hope for a better future.
