A couple of people have emailed recently to ask whether The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is based on, or at least inspired by, Andrew Sean Greer's 2004 novel The Confessions of Max Tivoli, and if so, why the movie title was changed?

While the film version claims to be based on the story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it has far more in common with The Confessions of Max Tivoli, which is why I think people are confused. Even the way in which the main character ages backward (physically but not emotionally) is taken from Greer's book and not Fitzgerald's.
