Margaret and Steve Frawley celebrate the third birthday of their twin girls, Kelly and Kathy. The evening of the birthday party, Steve and Margaret attend a black-tie dinner in New York. When they return home, the police are in the house, and they are told that the babysitter had been found unconscious, the children are gone, and a note demanding an eight-million-dollar ransom had been left in their room. Steve's firm agrees to pay the ransom, but only one twin is recovered with a note saying that the other had been inadvertently killed and dumped in the ocean. However Kelly tells her mother that she can feel that Kathy is scared. At first, no one but their mother believes the twins are communicating, but as Kelly's warnings become increasingly specific and alarming the FBI agents set out on a search for Kathy whose life hangs by a thread.
